Visually impaired people (VIP) encounter difficulties with perception of environments in everyday life. A door on a wall or a column on a station might be easily detected and seen, but it is an invisible hazard for VIP. With this in mind, Contrast therefore is an essential and vital tool for VIP to navigate in this world (Bright et al; 1997, Dalke et al; 2004).

There are five key factors, according to Dalke and Conduit; 2010, which affect visual acuity (including contrast), for assessing the visibility of designs in a real world context. The colour contrast assessment model, developed by Dalke and Conduit enables designers, builders, consultants, developers to predict before and after installation whether a VIP is able to see an object, text or element of a building component.

As outlined in AS1428.1 (2009) and AS 1428.4.1 (2009), contrast measurement is vital in building guidelines for design of environments and services for VIP. Therein the standards, the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) measurement must be measured using either a colourimter or a spectrophotometer with diffused illumination using Illuminant D65. LRV is measured through the visible colour spectrum, which is beyond what can be distinguished by the human eye alone.

Measurement of LRV refers to both colour and appearance of the sample and uses geometric principles that relate to additional attributes such as gloss or shine. Spectrophotometers that are used to measure these characteristics typically utilises:

Diffuse d/8° Sphere, specular reflectance included
Diffuse d/8° Sphere, specular reflectance excluded

In addition, the instrument has to be capable of measuring CIE for Yxy colour space. The measured LRV is defined by the tristimulus value Y. The chromaticity coordinates x and y provide an indication of the colour.

Tecnopails Launches the Matrix series filling system with Rexson Paint Dispensing

Tecnopails, the dedicated filling division of IM GROUP (formerly Inkmaker Group), has launched a new feed and closure filling-line series—with a specific line dedicated for integration with Rexson’s ColorPoint paint dispenser.

The robust system, capable of expanding from manual through to fully automatic solutions, was named the “Matrix” due to its ability to be easily configured through a variety of adjustable modules. One such module is the Matrix+Rexson/Colorpoint created especially for integration with IM GROUP’s “Easypaint” solution. The Easypaint concept is IM GROUP’s most flexible and complete range of automatic dispensing solutions, tailored to meet precise performance and productivity targets while maximising available space and minimising manpower.

TEKO Installs Inkmaker "Easypaint 24V" at Mowilex, Indonesia

Jakarta, Indonesia, 16 August 2022.

PT Teko Tinting and Engineering—IM GROUP’s Southeast-Asian based tinting-solutions and R&D branch—has completed a major installation, of an Inkmaker top-of-the-range paint dispensing system, at Mowilex’s factory in Serang, Indonesia.

The installation of the Inkmaker Easypaint 10v+24v water-based dispensing system—designed for interior exterior and decorative paints including roof paints, water proofing, and wood staining—was the result of a tripartite collaboration involving leading-edge

technology from IM GROUP’s; Inkmaker Turin, Inkmaker Shanghai and PT Teko Tinting and Engineering. The installed system comes powered by Inkmaker’s IMAESTRO software which connects virtually to modern ERP systems.”

PT Mowilex Indonesia, a leading producer of premium paints and coatings in Indonesia, with a workforce of over 1,000 team members and products distributed over 8,000 stores throughout the archipelago, compared several leading systems before settling on the optimal paint-dispensing solution:

“The Easypaint’s production speed, formula-dosing accuracy and detailed work-order traceability is impressive,” explained Niko Safavi, CEO of PT Mowilex, “the customised version, which Teko installed at our Cikande factory, is expected handle up to 70 tons per month, with 21 days of operation per month, translating into 3,3 tons per day.”

Having designated 50% of its new 6-plus-hectare factory at Cikande as a green area, Mowilex—a pioneer in the development of environmentally friendly practices since its inception in 1970—looked for a system that could achieve its eco-friendly goals:

“Due to the high-precision dosing of the Inkmaker Easypaint we no longer require unnecessary extra stock, and can therefore eliminate unnecessary waste as well as having a cleaner production site,” concluded Safavi.

“The installation was particularly challenging for our team,” explained Michael Setiadi, Director of PT Teko Tinting and Engineering, Supply-chain, “deliveries were delayed and, due to lockdowns in Shanghai being at the peak of the Omicron variant, this limited the speed of our operations in Serang. Thankfully, being part of IM GROUP, we were able to tap into its collective knowledge and resources to best optimise our activities and minimise delays.”

Refrigerant gas change

Refrigerant R404a has until now been widely used in commercial refrigeration systems and freezers as well as refrigerated transport systems.

However, this is not ideal due to its very high Global Warming Potential (GWP -3922). Its use is now being restricted and it is to be phased out.

In order to remove Ascott’s reliance on this gas we have worked hard to find a replacement that is not only more environmentally friendly but is also able to offer a similar performance when used in our refrigeration systems.

This involved over a year of development work and product testing but we have a replacement that is now being used in all of our products that previously used R404a.

R449a is a is a next-generation HFO-based refrigerant that combines excellent cooling performance but which is also:

Non-Ozone depleting and low GWP (Global Warming Potential)
Has improved energy efficiency compared to R404a.
Is quick, easy, cost effective to retro fit
Safe, non toxic and non-flammable (ASHRAE A1 Safety Classification)

Rhopoint ID Imaging Transmission Appearance Meter Released

In response to an industry need for an improved method for characterising the transmission characteristics of transparent materials, the Rhopoint ID has been released using a new metric termed Illumination
Diffusion (ID), developed at ETH Zürich.

The cloudy, “hazy” appearance of transparent materials can determine their suitability for specific applications. (Packaging materials are typically highly transparent in order to reproduce the vivid colours and finer details of the product, while cosmetics may require a high opacity.)

A conventional “haze-meter” quantifies the amount of light scattered over a certain range of angles from the direction of the incident beam.

This test method has a number of weaknesses:
– Being based on an arbitrary range of scattering angles, the definition of “haze” does not correlate directly to the human perception of transparency.
– The “haze” metric doesn’t capture the change of a material’s transparency with separation distance between the material and the viewed object – Obviously important for packaging materials which specifically target contact or non-contact applications.
– A typical instrument outputs a single value averaged over a large specimen area. Local defects may not be detected.

Rhopoint ID addresses all the above and quantifies the loss of transparency as Illumination Diffusion (ID), precisely capturing the visual effects of diffuse scattering of light as it passes through a material. Based on an imaging method, it is configured to specifically match the human perception of transparency. The instrument outputs in-contact optical properties, as well as their variation with specimen-to-object separation distance, and can show local specimen areas.

Milli-Ohmeter Digital Resistance Meter available from Novasys Group

Rhopoint’s Milli-Ohmeter is a battery-operated digital resistance meter designed to accurately measure resistances from 0.001 ohm to 200 ohms.

The Milli-Ohmeter uses a four-terminal measurement network to eliminate errors caused by test lead resistance.

Christian Maier GmbH & Co will be exhibiting in Hall 3/A73 at the forthcoming K 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany, from the 19th to 26th of October, 2106.

K 2016 is the World’s No. 1 trade fair for the Plastics and Rubber Industry!

Christian Maier will be showing their range of rotary joints, used to connect pressure piping systems to rotating rollers or machines.

Maier rotary joints will feed media like hot and cold water, steam, thermal oil, compressed air (up to 40 bar), vacuum, hydraulic oil and coolant into the rotating equipment.

Additionally, multi-passage joints are available, which feed media and electrical power, data and other signals to rotating machinery.

New Repair Facility for Christian Maier Rotary Joints in Melbourne

Recently we have been quite a few users of our competitors rotary unions contacting us..….

In general, we’ve found that there are two reasons they contact us:

First, once the users have decided on the parts (or replacement joint) that is required, the delivery from the supplier takes many weeks (or in a few cases, months!) Obviously, this is unsatisfactory if you have a joint that is failing or already has failed.

Second, when they wanted to refurbish a joint, they needed to buy the “spare parts kit”. In many cases, that kit included things such as rotors, which would normally only need replacing every 2, 3 or 4 refurbishments. They were building up a stock of parts that will never be used….

As you know (fortunately!), Christian Maier GmbH isn’t like that!

Virtually all Christian Maier’s parts (and a great proportion of their complete joints) are available ex stock, either in Melbourne or in Germany. Even if the parts need to be delivered from Germany, in most cases you receive them inside 2 weeks.

And now, in response to requests from our customers, Novasys has set up a new facility where we can carry out the refurbishment or repair of rotary joints!

Christian Maier GmbH Moves Into New Office Building

Christian Maier’s new office wing has been completed and staff moved in in late March 2012.

A new main entrance with staircase and elevator has been completed between the two office wings. The existing wing will be renovated and provided with a new heating system and thermal insulation.

This new area provides accommodation for an additional 30-40 desks, and enables all administration offices and meeting rooms to be provided in the one building for the first time.

The “coming together” of all administration personnel in the one area will also considerably improve communications between the various departments.
