Measurement of Roll Hardness, Hardness Profile, Hardness Variation

The PROTEQ PAROtester 2 is a new test instrument for objective and rapid evaluation of rolled-up paper, foils, films etc.

Unevenly wound rolls lead to loss of material and time during printing or converting. The portable PAROtester 2 allows the roll hardness and the hardness profile of rolls to be measured immediately and everywhere. Problematic rolls can be detected in good time prior to use and can be isolated or excluded.

The hardness of paper rolls is an important quality factor in the working process of printing shops. Rolls that are too hard, or too soft, or rolls that are unevenly wound, or with different moisture content can cause difficulties during the printing process.

Unevenly wound rolls lead to loss of material and time during printing or converting. The portable PAROtester allows the roll hardness and hardness profile of rolls to be measured immediately and everywhere.

Different web products and different applications for these products will dictate the roll hardness desired. Once the desired roll hardness profile is determined, it needs to be measured and then reproduced on a consistent basis. The measurement tools need to be hand held and available on the winder so that an operator can check the roll hardness being obtained and accordingly make adjustments to ensure the roll hardness is within the acceptable range for that product.

The PAROtester is similar in operation to the Schmidt Hammer, a device that was designed for concrete testing and has been adapted for use as a roll hardness tester. The PAROtester has been specifically developed for evaluation of hardness of rolled-up paper, foil and films. The PAROtester is considerably more sensitive, has less impact energy and is less operator dependent. The Schmidt Hammer has a number of limitations that require frequent readjustment and calibration if errors and bias are to be eliminated. The PAROtester on the other hand is simple and safe to use, provides highly precise and reproducible results, with high wear resistance and reduced maintenance, amongst many other features.

The high resolution of the PAROtester opens new applications in the roll making industries as even small differences in roll hardness can be detected. In addition to foils and films, packing, tapes, labels and bags are tested with the PAROtester. The quality of different rolls of special and very thin materials is decisive in the success of producers and converters of those rolls.

Wastewater Toxicity Testing

Whether a paper mill or converter has its own activated sludge or IDEA biological wastewater treatment plant, or discharges to a publicly operated plant, allowing toxic contamination to enter the plant can be a VERY expensive business.

How well are the bacteria in your activated sludge treatment plants working? How will they respond to change, such as toxic contaminants in the incoming waters?

The Strathtox respirometer can tell you quickly, simply and clearly when the bacteria should be fed less, aerated less and loaded more. This is done by measuring their actual respiration rate.

Strathtox is very fast. Setup takes no more than 30 minutes and testing takes only 5 – 10 minutes, depending on the performance of the bacteria. This means no waiting around to implement changes that can save time, effort and costs.

Strathtox is produced by Strathkelvin Instruments, whose academic background and expertise is in the field of activated sludge bacteria used to treat wastewaters.

Seeing is believing, so we’d like to arrange a no obligation demonstration of the Strathtox in action, by Strathkelvin scientists, at your site. We will:

A. Test your activated sludge to see how it is performing
B. Compare these results with results from similar sites
C. Check bacterial response to introduction of potentially toxic materials.

We need a little space, power, water and a litre of your activated sludge, plus any influents you would like to have tested.

Demonstrations are being scheduled for mid to late November, when the Strathkelvin scientists are visiting Australia.

To arrange a demonstration, please call Harvey or Ron at (03) 9752 3766, or email sales@novasys.com.au. We can also send technical papers and descriptive literature at your request.

Do you have Problems with your Joints?

Walk around any paper machine and you’ll find lots of joints. Not only the dicky knees, shoulders and hips on the operators, but also Rotary Joints on machines; Joints that are used to transfer heating and cooling to rollers on calenders and elsewhere.

If the machine is European in origin, chances are the joints are made by Christian Maier GmbH & Co of Heidenheim in Germany. A quick look at the plate on the gold joint housing will confirm this.

As Christian Maier’s distributor in Australia, Novasys can supply replacement joints as well as spare parts for joint refurbishment.

Joints that are not well maintained will leak. Not too serious if the cooling medium is air or cold water, but if the heating medium is hot water, steam, or hot oil – usually under pressure – a leak can have serious consequences.

As well as supplying maintenance instructions for all Christian Maier Rotary Joints, Novasys will stock spares for common joints and have these available ex-stock, whether for preventive maintenance or emergency repairs. In any event, Maier keep stocks of all common joints and spare parts and these are deliverable within 7 – 10 days.

Customer experience has shown that obtaining replacement joints and spare parts through Novasys is far quicker AND CHEAPER that taking the circuitous route via the machine manufacturer. We will provide product ex-stock, or obtain them fast from Christian Maier direct.

If we are to provide a stock service, you can help us help you by telling us the type and number of Christian Maier Rotary Joints you have on your machines.

Send us an email, snail mail or a fax simply telling us what you have and we’ll do the rest.
